I am a big headed baby literally speaking. In my eight months of age, my head circumference is about 47 cm, a 2 cm larger than normal. The good news is it's still within the limit of normal size.
Dad and mom are actually worried about this. Dad is the first who notice the large size of my head. Mom is worried even more when she heard aunty Faizah (dad's sister) saying that my head looks "more than normal".
A day after aunty Faizah's statement, mom went to pediatrician (bidan) Bu Wahyu near our home. The pediatrician says it's ok with me. My big head is what the expert call as benign familial macrocephaly meaning a big head which is genetical. That's reasonable enough, my dad and dad's brother, uncle Ja'far Shodiq has a more than normal head's size. If you don't have a clue about macrocephaly, here's an intro:
Macrocephaly (from the ancient Greek μακρό- macro- long- + -κέφαλος -kephalos -head), occurs when the head is abnormally large; this includes the scalp, the cranial bone, and the contents of the cranium.
...[one of the causes are] benign familial macrocephaly (family tendency toward large head size)
Dad used to be worried that my big headed is caused by hydrocephalus which is very dangerous:
Hydrocephalus is sometimes known as "water on the brain". People with hydrocephalus have abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles, or cavities, of the brain. This may cause increased intracranial pressure inside the skull and progressive enlargement of the head, convulsion, and mental disability. Hydrocephalus can also cause death.
The pediatrician mom visited has assured her that my big head is the benign familial macrocephaly.
That's enough to make dad and mom sleep well at night. I myself just don't understand why they're worried so much.
